Empirical Constraints on the First Stars and Quasars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Empirical studies of the first generation of stars and quasars in the Universe will likely become feasible over the next decade. The Next Generation Space Telescope will provide direct imaging and photometry of sub–galactic objects at z ∼> 10, while microwave anisotropy experiments, such as MAP or Planck, will set constraints on the ionization history of the intergalactic medium due to these sources. We describe the expected signals that will be detectable with these future instruments.

Probing the Cosmic Dark Age in X–rays
Empirical studies of the first generation of stars and quasars will likely become feasible within the next decade in several different wavelength bands. Microwave anisotropy experiments, such as MAP or Planck, will set constraints on the ionization history of the intergalactic medium due to these sources. In the infrared, the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) will directly detect sub–galac...
متن کاملFirst Results from the Canada-france High-z Quasar Survey: Constraints on the Z = 6 Quasar Luminosity Function and the Quasar Contribution to Reionization
We present preliminary results of a new quasar survey being undertaken with multi-colour optical imaging from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The current data consists of 3.83 sq. deg. of imaging in the i and z filters to a 10σ limit of z < 23.35. Near-infrared photometry of 24 candidate 5.7 < z < 6.4 quasars confirms them all to be low mass stars including two T dwarfs and four or five L d...
متن کاملThe First Sources of Light
I review recent progress in understanding the formation of the first stars and quasars. The initial conditions for their emergence are given by the now firmly established model of cosmological structure formation. Numerical simulations of the collapse and fragmentation of primordial gas indicate that the first stars formed at redshifts z ≃ 20 − 30, and that they were predominantly very massive,...
متن کاملThe First Stars and Quasars
The first star clusters and quasars resulted directly from the growth of linear density fluctuations in the early Universe. Since they emerged from a well-defined set of initial conditions, the interplay between observational data from the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) and theoretical modeling will advance the current understanding of star and quasar formation. The first objects had a ...
متن کاملStudy of Possible Local Quasars I: The First Sample
This study provides new arguments for the existence of local quasars, i.e. quasars in the vicinity of low redshift galaxies. Local quasars are probably ejected from respective parent galaxy. The sample includes 74 quasars in the vicinity of 8 different galaxies. Assuming for quasars the same distances from the observer, as for their respective parent galaxy, simple calculations lead to the quas...
